Some of you reading this have just tuned out. A voice played in your mind saying, “I’m not creative…this doesn’t apply to me.” Let me just say that that is total complete and utter nonsense. Or, in more basic terms, a load of crap.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, is creative. This means you. I say this with complete and absolute certainty because, although I know very little about you, I am confident that you are in fact, human. To be human is to be creative. It is what we do.

Have you ever solved a problem? Have you ever set a goal and achieved it? Have you ever gotten lost and then gotten unlost? Have you ever fixed something that was broken? Have you ever written a poem? A letter? A note? Have you ever said something funny that you made up yourself? Have you ever completed a project in your yard or around the house, stepped back when you were done and just admired your work? Have you ever had children? Have you ever rearranged the furniture?

All of these are examples of creativity. Some of them are small and mundane. Some of them are huge and significant. Every day we take things as they are, we think about them and then we make them better. That is creativity, and it is completely within reach of all of us.

Art is not the only path for creativity. The arts are highly specialized channels of creative work, but you can express your creativity more common ways; how you organize your work, how you dress and speak. You can be creative in how you walk, how you drive, and how you eat. Creativity flows out of you every day, whether you like it or not.

Creativity is NOT the same as originality. Originality is HIGHLY overrated. Stop worrying about being the first, or the most, or even the best. Creativity is a way of seeing the world. It is about seeing better possibilities and taking action to make those possibilities realities.

Creativity is a skill that you can cultivate and develop. You were born creative. It’s just who you are by virtue of your membership is the species. Recognize and take pleasure in your creativity. Begin cultivating it so that you can create the life you want, the life that is good, and true, and beautiful.

Think about it. You’re pretty creative. I bet you can figure out how.
