Book Review – The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino

The Greatest Salesman in the World was one of the first personal development books I read and it still remains an anchor to my growth. In the book, 10 ancient scrolls reveal how to live as the greatest salesperson in the world. Since reading this book, I have experienced many other authors, concepts and teachings in personal and professional growth. It still amazes me though, how all of the new concepts I have learned can always be tied back to the 10 scrolls and the wisdom shared in them.

The scrolls are NOT sales techniques such as “10 Ways to Close” or “10 Easy Steps to Riches.” What they contain are lessons about how to improve your life, how the world works and how you can overcome obstacles (material or imagined). The information in the scrolls is for all people, not just salespeople.

The story is about Hafid, a poor camel boy who tended to the animals that ran carriages of merchandise. He had aspirations to be a great salesmen like the merchants he worked for so that the king’s daughter would notice him. He expressed his desire to the great salesman Pathros and asked to let him sell. Pathros gave him the chance, but purposely stacked the odds against him. He was told how hard it is to sell and what had happened to the many others that went before him.

Nevertheless, Hafid was determined to be a great salesman. He left with one good to sell, a robe, and was not to return until he had sold it. With a string of Nos, Hafid began to doubt himself. The typical struggle of the salesperson. Pathros finally unveiled the 10 scrolls that were passed on to him by the prior greatest salesman in the world.. He then gave Hafid a little bit of gold, the scrolls and sent him out into the world.

Hafid had simple instructions as to how he was to learn the material. He followed them and became the greatest salesman in the world. You can do the same by reading and living out the instructions in the scrolls.

There is a religious end to the story that you will have to read because it is excellent. Great lessons of life within, a must read, especially for the sales person who wants to be great.  The $8 investment in this book will pay for itself over and over and over again.

  1. One of the most impactful books I have EVER read. I read this when I was in college selling books door to door and it might be one of the biggest reasons I survived! There are quotes from that book that still echo in my day to day life. Example: If it is raining the first thing that pops into my mind, “I will love the rain for it cleanses my spirit…” I don’t know why, but I don’t care, because this book has simple wisdom and a positive way to view life and sales.
