Spring Cleaning for Your Brain

How many times have you felt completely overwhelmed in your life? If you are anything like most people, that answer is too many times to count. So today, I am going to show you how to do one simple thing. Make space. That’s it, make space. And we are going to make space in the place you need it the most, inside.

We live in a fast paced world. Most of us are juggling five million things throughout our day. As a result, our brain becomes cluttered like our office or our desk. Do you know the feeling you get when your office or home become overwhelmed with papers, piles, lists, contracts to sign, junk mail, dirty laundry, dirty dishes and it reaches the point where you finally say “That’s it! I’m just going to clean this mess up before I do anything else!” And then when you complete the cleaning and organizing, you feel euphoric, you feel fresh and ready to start over. You’re like “Bring it on!”

Well, your brain needs that same cleaning and organizing. Some need it more than others, but we all need it.

Would you like the magic key to start this enormous cleansing and cleaning process for your brain?

Good. Here it is. Stop. Just stop. Most of us usually have 3 or 4 internal conversations going on with ourselves every second of everyday. So stop. Turn off the radio, TV, computer, internal conversations, cell phone and sit there. Do absolutely nothing.

It is best if you are not looking at anything in particular and close your eyes. You can stay seated or lay down. If you fall asleep that’s ok. Concentrate on your breath, it is nearly impossible to have thoughts if you pay attention to the ins and outs of your breath.

The amazing thing is that you don’t need to do this for a long period of time. 10 minutes will do wonders, and you will be amazed at how long the first five minutes will take and how you will be ready to explode. Thoughts will be zooming around; it will feel like you are going crazy. But hang in there, have patience and don’t worry if you do have some thoughts pop up. The point isn’t to be perfect, the point is to try.

Set an alarm for the amount of time that you are going to attempt to stop so that you don’t have to keep looking at your watch. You do not need to do anything else; your brain will naturally start to clean up and organize. It’s a little bit like defragmenting your computer and when you are done you will be running more efficiently and with less stress.
