The Irony of Systems

David DenisSo…you say you want to be free? What if I told you that in order to be free you need to enslave yourself?

Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Nevertheless, when you set up effective systems and enslave yourself to them, you will find the discipline required to obtain freedom is much easier.

Freedom is simply the capacity to exercise choice. When you are free, you choose to be who you want, to do what you want, and to have what you want. This does NOT mean lack of responsibility or accountability. In fact, freedom requires that you increase your level of accountability. To become free, you CHOOSE to become more accountable to yourself, and to your own purpose, values and goals.

That’s why true freedom is just not possible without discipline. This increased level of accountability requires that we become more and more disciplined about the choices we make and the actions we take every day. When we consistently make choices and take action in alignment with our purpose, values and goals, only then do we find ourselves achieving what we truly want from life – we become free.

I can hear the howling and gnashing of teeth. Most of us hate the concept of discipline. But wait! Before you tune me out, read on. There is a way of stacking the game in your favor. The key is to create systems that make up for the disciplined habits that you don’t have.

A system is just a series of activities that yield predictable proven results. For instance, when you drive to work, do you drive the same route each day? That is a system. After a little practice, you don’t really have to think about it, you just do it. A good system makes the formation of good habits easy, supporting and reinforcing the discipline you don’t think you have.

A good system has a few key qualities:

  1. It is in alignment with your purpose, values and goals
  2. It removes obstacles
  3. It is automatic (hands off) or creates habits

For example, it is important in achieving my goals that I save money. So I set up a system where I create an auto transfer so that my bank takes money from my checking account and puts it in savings each month automatically, without asking me. Now, I get closer to my goals each month (alignment). I don’t have to make a decision each month about how much to transfer (an obstacle) and it happens whether I think of it or not (automatic). Suddenly, I become a super-disciplined person about saving money – because I have a system.

Some systems require a bit more involvement. For instance, a selling presentation is a system. You have to GIVE the presentation, but the beauty of a memorized selling presentation is that your words are pre-selected, freeing you up to communicate, rather than worry about what you will say next. In order to make it work, however, you must devote yourself to learning and using the presentation.

That is at once the beauty and the irony of systems. When you enslave yourself to systems that are in alignment with your purpose, values and goals, they make achieving your goals so much easier, and so much more likely. No matter how you slice it, that’s freedom, and that’s good good stuff.

I would love to hear about systems in your life that create freedom for you.

  1. Thanks for this post Dave! You are always really insightful. Never thought of it this way. I often hear “I want to be free to do whatever I want.” Well, the way you describe it, this thought actually works in reverse. First decide what it is that you want, set systems to get it, and then you will be free. Makes sense!
