Winners of the Attitude Boost Contest
What great responses we received for our What is Your Attitude Boost Contest! I want to thank everyone who posted their phrases and actions for getting over a NO. “Next” was by far the most common response, and it works, but our winners really had some unique answers. If you ever need a pick me up after a rejection, our blog readers have some great phrases for you. Read all of the contest entries.
It was really tough picking the top 3 but decisions had to be made.
Here are the winners.
First Place, winner of the Freedom Personal Development Sweatshirt
Kathy – Comment #55:
I sing (in my head – if I’m around others!) one of the following verses:
“I get knocked down -
But I get up again -
You’re never going to keep me down”
or
“I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky,
I think about it every night and day, spread my wings and fly away”
or any other pump up song that comes to mind…
…then I put them in my file to call in 3-6 months.
I couldn’t resist the sheer “off-the-wall” answer that Kathy gave us here. I can not imagine having these songs come out of your mouth and not bringing some sort of a smile to your face. I don’t know any person who thinks of Chumbawumba (the band who sings the first song) on a regular basis and doesn’t suffer from random acts of goofiness or fits of laughter. Even though I might not invite you to be the DJ at my next party Kathy, you are the winner in my book!

Second Place – Winner of an “Expect Success” Book
Louise Mont-Eton – Comment #21
“Today is a beautiful day!”
Awesome Louise! What a great way to realize the beauty in the present moment. So simple; and if you take this phrase to heart when you say it, it will completely snap you out of any funk where you are trapped in the “imaginary future” or the “perceived past” AND help get your perspective back…because it is a beautiful day.
Third Place – Winner of a Freedom Personal Development Water Bottle
Tom Van Lieu – Comment #25
“Always at it wins the day.”
Action Action Action. Tom’s phrase creates an image in my mind of someone saying this in between cold calls and not letting anything stand in their way. I don’t think this phrase is concerned with results, I think it is about ACTION, and many times, if you are skilled at what you do, and you keep moving forward, you will succeed. It is like a running back in a football game who keeps pumping his legs even when he is getting tackled, he is still “at it”. Good one Tom.
And I would like to point out to all of those who commented with the “actions they DO” after a rejection that your comments were awesome and I love reading them BUT I was looking for the phrases you SAY or THINK when you get rejected.
I really liked the “doing action” in #37 by Tom Owings -
Whenever I’ve lost a sale or a listing prospect, I always try to go out IMMEDIATELY and get two more, whether it be listings or sales, to replace the one I lost. We can always dwell on failure, so to overcome this I try IMMEDIATELY to “go hunt” for new listings or buyers. That way I stay focused on positive actions, not negative thoughts. And you know, when you do get another listing or sale, the success is even better.
Nice one Tom!

VP of Sales

Thank you, Tom! I really appreciate you choosing my entry! I was a little reluctant on posting it, because it is a “little” off-the-wall, however, it has worked for me for years now. I don’t really let rejection bother me, because like you said, it’s hard to feel down after singing a verse or two!
My husband wants to add a comment “that’s my wife” because he knows I really do this!
Thanks again!

Plagiarizing Wins?
There’s nothing wrong with #1 & #2 but at least #3 is original. Chumbawumba?, An awesome group with 1 hit but heck why not “Baby’s Got Back?” cause you know you are going to get some after work? Would that have gotten second place because getting some can be just as important to drive you to your next deal? Goofiness and laughter is not the only thing that boosts ones attitude right? Again, nothing wrong with this as people have tons of songs that motivate, but this is completely unoriginal. How about if someone choose “Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac? That is a way better song then Chumba and is still one of the most popular ever for boosting attitudes all over the world. Do you know how many attitude boosting songs people could have come up with? The list would have been huge.
If anyone here knew they could plagiarize a song they would have quoted Gandhi and how would you ever turn away a quote from Gandhi for the #1 position over a Chumbawumba hook? Heck, why didn’t someone just say, “Fall down seven times, get up eight”. Confucius would win right?
For #2 “It’s a Beautiful Day” is just not original. By default this should be a persons wake up call out the door. How about singing, It’s a beautiful day in tne neighborhood, a beautiful day in the neighborhood from Mr. Rogers? Thats goofy, funny, and a call to the beauty of your surroundings. How about “The World is Beautiful On This Day?” which carries with it a huge symbolic connection to not only a beautiful day but the world around you. But again,,,,,,, not original and I wouldn’t accept this as “New”.
#11 should at least be first as it is an action and a boost. There are several other original ones you past up as well that were absolutely about boosting attitude and…… they were completely original…. things never before written and not plagiarized.
Something new for people to create thought provoking boosts besides ones they already have! Tom, you blew it with your audience on this one.
Congratulations to the Winners. You are still awesome people even if I don’t agree that you should be recognized for using others materials. #11…. good job buddy. You at least didn’t take from preexisting materials that I’ve ever read.

Geez Peter, don’t sugar coat it, tell me how you really feel.
Seriously, I very much appreciate your post. I’m curious what other people would have chosen as the winner if they couldn’t choose their own. So, this is my call to action: Let me hear your thoughts on who I chose as the top 3 AND (this is the important part) who would you have chosen to be #1 and WHY.

Peter, I think you are a little off-track here. The question for the contest was:
What do you say to yourself, to bounce back, after you failed to close a sale or felt rejected during the sales process?
My answer reflects what I say to myself in these situations. Are you saying that any time we sing along, or sing a song in our head, or maybe repeat a quote from a book or a movie that we are plagiarizing? Then I would guess most of us spend our entire lives doing this.
I imagine that writers, of anything, actually write hoping that what they write will catch on and will be repeated by others. Why write something to be published if no one can ever speak it, think it, or sing it for fear of being accused of plagiarizing?? Have you ever asked “Got Milk”? If so, then you plagiarized.
I think Tom was trying to get some ideas out there so all of us can use them when we need an attitude boost, and he chose winners based on his opinions of which ideas he thought were most creative. Thanks again, Tom!

“Are you saying that any time we sing along, or sing a song in our head, or maybe repeat a quote from a book or a movie that we are plagiarizing?
This quote doesn’t make any sense in regards to what I wrote. There’s nothing wrong with what you wrote. But its not original. Its something Anyone could write as I explained clearly in my examples.
So the next time Tom comes up with a contest everyone will just start hammering in ideas already created. Do you know how long this list would be if every inspired song was placed on this list? What you did was on the same level as quoting from a Martin Luther King speech. This is what I call Plagiarizing. Its not creative or new to the world of boosting attitudes. These are already known. At least yours is better than the person who writes “Next”.
What Tom has failed to do is embrace the creativity that was brought to the board. To simply rehash what is already done doesn’t recognize the people who came up with actual ideas & or statements of how to boost attitude.
I recognized #11 for being at least new and would consider his response fair as a winner. So I was clear that giving it to you as the #1 position was just BS and I stand by that decision firmly. I will post in a few days who 1,2 and 3 should have been. If anything, I think I’m helping Tom here by stating what others don’t have the time to write. Nobody wants to be the bad guy! I’m willing to be confrontational when it makes a difference in future decisions.

Whooops! No offense to #11 but what I meant was #25 the 3rd winner can be recognized as original and therefore okay to be in the topp 3. My apologies to #11 but I will review it to see if its in my top 3.
Regards,
Peter
